Get B2 before Germany's doctor exam
Get a recognised B2 certificate before registering for Germany's medical language exam. Sending your licence application earlier is different.

Get a recognised B2 certificate before you register for the medical language exam in Germany. The exam is not a replacement for B2. It tests whether you can speak medical German at about C1 level.
Can you register without B2?
Usually, no. The state medical chamber needs B2 proof before it accepts your exam registration or gives you an exam date.
Each German state runs its own process. The papers and order can differ. But B2 general German comes before the medical language exam for doctors (Fachsprachprüfung).
Do not mix up two applications
You may send your doctor licence application to the recognition office from abroad. That file contains your passport, degree, home licence, good standing certificate, and other papers.
This is different from booking the language exam. The state medical chamber handles the language exam. It asks for its own registration papers.

Why B2 comes first
B2 shows you can handle general German. You need it for emails, forms, apartment visits, and calls with hospital staff.
The medical language exam then tests 3 tasks in one 60-minute sitting. You speak with a patient, write a report, and hand the case to a doctor examiner.
The examiner checks your language. They do not test difficult medical facts. Still, you need enough German to understand the patient and write a clear report.
What to prepare first
Start your licence file early if your chosen state allows it. Do not wait until every paper is ready before asking the recognition office about translations and certified copies.
At the same time, prepare for a recognised B2 exam. Keep the original certificate and a clear scan. Your chamber may ask for both.
- Choose the German state before you book B2 or medical German courses.
- Ask the state medical chamber which B2 certificates it accepts.
- Send your B2 certificate with the chamber's exam registration form.
- Prepare patient interviews and discharge reports after you pass B2.
What to do now
- Choose the German state where you will apply for your doctor licence.
- Email that state's medical chamber: "Which B2 certificates do you accept for medical language exam registration?"
- Book a recognised B2 exam and save the certificate as a PDF.
- Send your medical language exam registration after your B2 result arrives.
Stand: 2026-10-18. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
