When German doctors must join the chamber

Foreign doctors register with the state medical chamber when they start medical work in Germany, even with a temporary work permit.

German doctors join after first shift: You register with the medical chamber when medical work begins, not when you apply for your licence.

You do not join the medical chamber when you send your licence application. You join when you begin medical work in Germany.

This also applies when you work with a temporary work permit. Your hospital start date is the important date.

The state medical chamber is the public body for doctors in your state. It keeps your workplace, address, specialist training, and membership details.

The first working day matters

Your first day as a junior doctor starts chamber registration. This happens after you receive your full doctor licence or temporary work permit.

A temporary work permit (Berufserlaubnis) lets you work as a doctor for up to 2 years in total. You still join the chamber while working with it.

There are 3 separate offices. The licensing office gives your permit.

The hospital gives your contract and first working day. The chamber registers you after your work starts.

A simple list showing the licence office, hospital, and medical chamber as three separate steps.

You send the registration

You normally send the chamber form yourself. Human resources may remind you about it.

The human resources office does not register you instead. Keep the confirmation letter after the chamber accepts your form.

Use the chamber for the state where you work. A doctor working in Cologne registers with the North Rhine chamber.

Your home address abroad does not choose the chamber. Your hospital address chooses it.

Each state chamber has its own online form or paper form. Berlin, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia ask for different details.

Papers to prepare

Keep one folder ready after your hospital contract arrives. The chamber asks for papers showing your identity, permit, and workplace.

  • Passport or German identity document
  • Full doctor licence or temporary work permit
  • Hospital contract or employer confirmation
  • German address and registration certificate, if available
  • Completed chamber registration form

Some chambers also ask for your medical degree. Others ask for a passport photo or name-change certificate.

Read the form for your work state before uploading files. Save clear PDF copies in your hospital folder.

Do this after your contract

  1. Save your licence or temporary work permit as a clear PDF.
  2. Ask human resources for written confirmation of your first working day.
  3. Open the chamber website for your hospital's state.
  4. Send the membership form with your permit and workplace papers.
  5. Keep the chamber confirmation beside your hospital contract.

Your licence lets you work as a doctor. Your first medical job makes chamber registration necessary.
