Germany has no single language exam score

Germany has no single public passing percentage for the medical language exam. Your state medical chamber decides using its own marking rules.

Doctors in Germany: no single score: Your state medical chamber decides if you pass the medical language exam.

Foreign doctors do not pass Germany’s medical language exam with one national percentage. Your state medical chamber decides whether you pass, using its own marking rules.

That is why you may search for a number and find none. A forum post from Berlin does not tell you the passing score in Lower Saxony.

There is no Germany-wide score

The medical language exam for doctors is run by the state medical chamber. Germany has 16 states, and the chambers organise their own exam process.

Some chambers publish detailed marking sheets. Others explain the exam parts but do not publish one public pass percentage. The letter you receive after the exam gives the decision.

So do not build your study plan around a number from Telegram. Build it around the 3 tasks you must complete in the examination room.

A three-part picture of the German medical language exam: patient interview, written report, and doctor discussion.

What examiners listen for

This exam tests medical German, not your medical knowledge. The examiner wants to hear clear German during a patient interview, a written report, and a doctor-to-doctor talk.

  • Can you ask a patient clear questions about pain, medicines, and symptoms?
  • Can you write a readable medical report after the interview?
  • Can you give a doctor the important facts in the right order?
  • Can you understand questions and answer them in medical German?

A perfect accent is not the target. The patient and the doctor examiner must understand your words without guessing.

The exam has 3 parts

The exam lasts 60 minutes in total, as of October 2026. Each part lasts about 20 minutes.

  1. Speak with a patient and take the medical history.
  2. Write a medical report from your notes.
  3. Hand over the case to a doctor examiner.

The same case follows you through all 3 parts. If you miss an allergy in the interview, your report and handover may also miss it.

What to do before your exam

Prepare for the examiner’s tasks, not a secret percentage. Use one patient case from start to finish every day.

  • Ask your state medical chamber for its current exam information sheet.
  • Practise 20-minute patient interviews with a timer and a colleague.
  • Write one German medical report from each practice interview.
  • Record a 2-minute handover and listen for unclear words.

Stand: 2026-10-16. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
