German exam retakes have no one limit

Germany has no single limit for medical language exam retakes. Your state medical chamber sets the attempts, registration steps and next exam date.

German doctors: retakes differ by state: Your state medical chamber sets attempts, registration and dates for the language exam.

Germany has no single retake limit for the medical language exam. Your state medical chamber decides how many attempts you get and how you register again.

This matters before you choose a state for your application. A failed exam letter in Cologne does not follow the same rules as one in Hanover.

Who sets the retake rules?

The state medical chamber runs the medical language exam for doctors (Fachsprachprüfung). Germany has 16 states, and each chamber publishes its own exam rules.

The national recognition portal tells doctors to choose their state first. That is because language papers, appointments and licence offices differ by state.

Do not trust a Facebook comment from another city. Ask the chamber named on your exam invitation.

What changes after a failed exam?

The chamber tells you whether you must submit a new form. It also tells you whether a course certificate or a waiting period applies.

Some chambers let you book through an online portal. Others send an email or letter with the next registration steps.

A simple comparison showing that one German state chamber sets the exam rules for its own doctors.

The exam itself stays similar

The exam tests medical German, not medical knowledge. It has a patient interview, a written report and a talk with a doctor examiner.

It lasts 60 minutes in total, with about 20 minutes for each part. That format helps you prepare even when the retake rules differ.

Use your result sheet

Read the failed result sheet line by line. It may show problems with the patient interview, the written report, or the doctor handover.

Book practice for the weak part first. Repeating full vocabulary lists will not fix a poor written discharge letter.

Get one written answer

Send one short email before you pay for another course or move states. Put your full name and exam date in the subject line.

  • Write to the state medical chamber named on your exam letter.
  • Ask: “How many attempts are allowed for my medical language exam?”
  • Ask: “When may I register after my failed exam on [date]?”
  • Ask: “Which form and papers must I send for my next attempt?”

Keep the chamber’s reply with your exam letter and passport copy. That email is more useful than advice from a Telegram group.

Stand: 2026-10-13. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
