Pick the right German B2 paper
For a German doctor licence, B2 certificates are accepted by state. Check your chosen state’s list before booking Goethe, telc, ÖSD or TestDaF.

Choose your German B2 certificate from your chosen state’s list before you pay for the exam. A Goethe, telc, ÖSD, or TestDaF paper is common. Your licensing office decides which one it accepts.
This matters before you book an exam seat in Cairo, Istanbul, Delhi, or Berlin. One B2 paper can cost money and months of study. A paper your office refuses does not move your doctor licence application forward.
What does B2 mean here?
B2 is your general German level. It is separate from the medical language exam for doctors (Fachsprachprüfung). You need both for your full doctor licence application in Germany.
The medical language exam is about level C1 and is run by the state medical chamber. It tests a patient interview, a written report, and a talk with a doctor examiner.
Which B2 papers are common?
German licensing offices commonly list certificates from large exam providers. The names below are the papers you will see most often in state guidance.
- Goethe-Zertifikat B2 from the Goethe-Institut.
- telc Deutsch B2 from telc.
- ÖSD Zertifikat B2 from the Austrian German Language Diploma.
- TestDaF, where the required result matches B2 level.
The certificate must show your name, exam date, level, and result. Send the certificate named by your office. Do not send a school report, a course attendance letter, or a screenshot from an online class.

Why the state decides
Germany has 16 states. You apply to the licensing office in the state where you plan to work. That office publishes its own list of accepted language papers and may set extra rules.
For example, one office may accept a named B2 paper directly. Another office may ask for a certificate from a provider on its website. The certificate name, score, and issue date can matter.
The national recognition portal confirms that language requirements vary by state. It also says you can apply for recognition from abroad. So choose the state first, then choose the exam.
Do not use the wrong paper
A common mistake is booking the fastest B2 exam near home. The exam centre says its certificate is valid. That does not mean the licensing office in Bavaria, Berlin, or North Rhine-Westphalia accepts it.
Another mistake is confusing B2 with the medical language exam. A B2 certificate does not replace the doctor language exam. The doctor language exam does not replace a B2 paper when your office asks for one.
What to do now
- Pick the German state where you will apply for your doctor licence.
- Open that state licensing office website and find its language certificate list.
- Match the full exam name and required score before booking.
- Save the office page as a PDF with your application papers.
- Email the office the certificate name if its webpage is unclear.
Stand: 2026-10-13. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
