Wait for work before family moves to Germany

Bring your family after you have a German doctor job, suitable housing, and money papers. A recognition visa does not bring them automatically.

German doctors: wait for work: Bring family after your job, home, and money papers are ready.

Bring your family to Germany after you have a signed doctor job, a home, and money shown on paper. Without these papers, the family visa case is much harder at the German embassy.

This feels unfair when you study German alone. The embassy needs to see where your spouse and children will live.

It also needs to see how the family will pay rent, food, and insurance. A temporary room and exam preparation papers rarely answer those questions.

A study visa is not enough

A recognition visa lets you come to Germany for licensing steps. It can cover German classes, the language exam for doctors, and the knowledge exam.

It does not automatically give your spouse and children a family visa. The German embassy checks their application separately.

The recognition visa lasts up to 24 months. It can be extended by 12 months, up to 3 years total.

It also allows a side job of 20 hours each week. That work is rarely enough for a whole family’s rent and living costs.

What the embassy wants to see

The common case is simple. Your spouse applies after you have a hospital contract, a residence permit, and a flat for everyone.

  • Your signed hospital contract with salary details
  • Your rental contract showing the flat address and size
  • Your residence permit card or visa page
  • Passports, marriage certificate, and birth certificates
  • Health insurance papers for each family member

The embassy handling your family’s visa checks these papers. Later, the local immigration office checks your address and residence permit in Germany.

Money is the hard part

A blocked account can support your own recognition visa. The required proof is €1,091 a month, or €13,092 for 12 months, as of October 2026.

That amount is for your own visa proof. It does not replace the family’s housing and money papers for a family visa application.

A signed junior doctor contract changes the picture. It gives the embassy a salary document, an employer name, and a reason for your residence.

When should your family apply

Apply after you have the job contract and rental contract. Do not book flights before the visa sticker is in their passports.

There is one important exception. Family rules can be easier if you already hold a skilled worker permit or EU Blue Card.

A doctor preparing licensing exams is not in that position yet. First get the hospital contract.

Then find the flat. Then start the family visa file.

What to do now

  1. Keep your marriage and birth certificates ready for German translation.
  2. Ask your future hospital for a signed contract with salary details.
  3. Choose a flat only after checking its size for your family.
  4. Read the German embassy page for your family’s country before booking flights.
