German dentists need a different language exam

German dentists need dental FSP preparation. Physician cases use different patient talks, dental terms and treatment notes.

German dentists need a different exam: Physician FSP material misses dental patient talks and treatment notes.

Dentists in Germany need dental exam preparation. Physician FSP cases teach the wrong patient talk, terms and treatment notes.

Both exams test professional German. They are not the same simulation. A dentist who practises chest pain and ward handovers loses time before a dental exam.

Two separate professional worlds

The language exam for doctors checks communication in human medicine. The dental version checks communication in a dental treatment room.

Your licensing office decides which exam belongs to your application. A dentist applies for a dental licence, not a physician licence.

The exact exam format differs by federal state. Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria use their own dental bodies and exam rules.

The patient case is different

A physician candidate may take a history of fever, chest pain or abdominal pain. Then they present the patient to another doctor.

A dental candidate needs dental questions. Picture a patient in the chair with tooth pain, bleeding gums, a loose crown or a swollen jaw.

  • Ask about pain location, duration, cold and heat sensitivity.
  • Use tooth numbers, surfaces and dental findings clearly.
  • Explain an X-ray, filling, root canal or extraction in plain German.
  • Discuss allergies, blood thinners and medical history before treatment.
A comparison of physician and dental language exam cases in Germany.

Your notes must sound dental

A physician case sheet may contain vital signs, medicines and a general examination. A dental note needs teeth, gums, X-rays and the treatment discussion.

Practise writing the same short dental note after every role-play. Include the complaint, findings, diagnosis and the treatment you discussed.

Do not memorise a perfect paragraph. The examiner needs to understand your German note and your clinical order.

Where dentists lose time

Dentists lose time when they buy a physician FSP course first. The role-plays may improve general German, but they do not teach dental words.

You also need the correct exam information from your state dental chamber or licensing office. The invitation letter names the body running your exam.

What to do now

  1. Read your invitation letter and write down the exam body.
  2. Download the dental exam information from your state dental chamber.
  3. Practise 10 dental patient cases with a dentist or dental German teacher.
  4. Write one dental treatment note after each practice case.
  5. Stop using physician ward handover scripts as your main material.

Prepare for the dental room you will enter. That is the exam Germany expects from a dentist.

Stand: 2026-10-03. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
