Should You Apply While Studying For Your German Exam

Yes, you can send German hospital applications while you study for the knowledge exam. The two clocks run separately.

Doctors: apply to German hospitals while you study: A German hospital can hire a doctor on a temporary permit while the knowledge exam is still pending.

Yes, apply now. Studying for the knowledge exam (Kenntnisprüfung) and applying to German hospitals are two different processes.

They run through two different offices. Waiting for one before starting the other just costs you time.

Why the two clocks don't wait for each other

The state medical chamber checks your knowledge and your papers. A hospital's HR office checks your CV and calls you for an interview.

These are separate desks, often in separate buildings. One does not ask the other if you are done yet.

What a hospital needs from you right now

A hospital needs one senior doctor with a training licence (Weiterbildungsbefugnis). That doctor can hire you on a temporary work permit (Berufserlaubnis) while your exam is still pending.

That permit covers up to 2 years. Your interview, your contract talk, even your start date can all happen before your exam date is fixed.

The hospital just needs your CV, your home licence, and proof you have applied for recognition.

How long is the wait really

Longer than most people plan for. The office that reviews your file must confirm it within 1 month.

It must decide within 4 months once your file is complete. But getting an exam date itself can take far longer.

In Bavaria, the wait for a knowledge exam date grew from about 6 months to 21 months.

A big number showing the Bavaria exam date wait growing from 6 to 21 months.

If you spend all of that time only studying, with no application sent, you lose a year you did not have to lose.

What this means for your evenings

Studying still comes first for the exam itself. But sending a CV takes an evening, not a semester.

Set your study blocks around your applications, not instead of them. The two do not compete for the same hours once you stop treating them as one task.

What to do today

  1. Send your CV and cover letter to hospitals now, even with your exam date not yet set.
  2. Ask the hospital in writing: how many months can my temporary work permit cover here?
  3. Keep your study schedule, but block the hours around applications, not instead of them.

Stand: 2026-10-31. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's medical chamber (Landesärztekammer) before you act.
