Doctors: apply to German hospitals before the exam
You don't need to pass the German medical language exam before you apply. A booked date is often enough to get interviews and a contract.

Apply as soon as your exam date for the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) is booked. Don't wait for the pass certificate.
Most hospitals in Germany know this exam takes months to schedule. A letter confirming your date is normal paperwork to them, not a red flag.
What is this exam, exactly
It is one 60-minute exam with 3 parts (as of 2026). A patient interview, a written report, and a talk with a doctor examiner.
Each part takes about 20 minutes. It checks your German, not your medical knowledge.
You need general German at level B2 first. Then this exam at about level C1, run by your state medical chamber (as of 2026).
What a hospital accepts before you pass
Your CV, your medical degree, your B2 certificate, and the letter that confirms your exam date. That date letter is proof you are close, not far.
The HR office or the chief will usually still invite you to interview. What changes is the contract start date, not the interview date.
Why waiting costs you months
Hospital posts for junior doctor jobs open and close fast. Do not wait for your pass certificate before you send a single application.
Getting an exam date alone takes weeks or months. Sitting the exam and getting the result takes more time still.
A hospital that likes your file now can hold the post open around your exam. They already do this around visa processing.

What if you fail the first attempt
You get another date. Failing once does not end your application.
Most hospitals that already interviewed you will wait for your next attempt. Tell them early.
What to say to the hospital
- Give the exact date of your exam, written in your email or cover letter.
- Say which chamber is running it, since each of the 17 state chambers schedules separately.
- Ask directly: can the start date move to after my exam result?
What to do this week
- Send your exam date confirmation letter with every application, not just your B2 certificate.
- Write one line in your cover letter naming the exam date.
- Ask the hospital in writing whether the contract can start after the exam, and get that answer before you sign anything.
Stand: 2026-10-30. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's medical chamber (Landesärztekammer) before you act.
