Claim This German Doctor Grant Before You Apply: The recognition grant (Anerkennungszuschuss) can refund almost €4,800 of your licence costs, but only before you pay.

Doctors moving to Germany can get back almost €4,800 of what the licence process costs. The catch is timing.

You have to ask for the grant before you spend the money. Ask after, and the grant office will not pay.

What is this grant?

It is called the recognition grant (Anerkennungszuschuss). Germany's education ministry funds it.

It pays back the cost of getting a foreign degree recognised. That includes a foreign medical degree.

What costs does it cover?

  • Certified translations of your medical degree and transcripts
  • Document legalisation and courier fees to send papers abroad
  • Your medical language exam fee
  • Your knowledge exam fee

The medical language exam alone costs €595 in Lower Saxony. In Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, it is about €400 (as of 2026-10).

The knowledge exam adds €980 to €1,050 on top. That is the bill this grant is built to cover.

Why you have to apply before you pay

The grant office only pays for costs that have not happened yet. A receipt from last month does not count.

This is why doctors miss it. Most file their papers with the state medical chamber (Landesärztekammer) first.

They pay for translations and exams along the way. They only hear about the grant from another doctor afterward, when it is too late.

How much can you actually get?

The grant can reach close to €4,800. Your actual amount depends on your state and which papers your file needs.

Check your exact cap on the official page before you plan around it.

Four steps to take before filing a German licence application: apply for the grant, wait for approval, then pay for exams and translations, then send receipts.

What to do this week

  1. Contact a recognition counselling office (IQ-Netzwerk) near you. Ask them to start the grant application for you.
  2. Do not pay for translations, couriers or exam fees yet. Wait for the grant office to confirm your application.
  3. Once you have the approval letter, pay for your language exam and knowledge exam as planned.
  4. Keep every receipt. Send them to the grant office for the refund.
  5. Only after this, file your licence (Approbation) application with your state medical chamber.

The grant does not change what your licence application needs. It changes who pays for the parts that qualify: the German government, instead of you.

Stand: 2026-10-25. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
