Apply to German Hospitals Before Your Exam

A booked language exam date is often enough to apply to German hospitals. See what to send and the cover letter line that works.

Apply to German Hospitals Before Your Exam: A booked language exam date is often enough for a foreign doctor to start applying to German hospitals now.

You do not need to pass the language exam for doctors (Fachsprachprüfung) before you apply to German hospitals.

A booked exam date is usually enough to apply now. The hospital still interviews you.

What changes is the start date on your contract, not whether you get a reply.

What hospitals actually check first

A hospital does not ask whether you already passed. It asks whether your German is on track.

You need general German at level B2. You also need a booked date for the medical language exam at about level C1 (as of 2026-10). Those two papers usually cover it.

What to send with your application

Send the same 4 papers every time, whether your exam is next week or next month.

  • Your German CV (Lebenslauf), built for a hospital, not a forum template.
  • Your medical degree and transcripts.
  • Your B2 general German certificate.
  • The exam date confirmation letter from your state medical chamber (Landesärztekammer).
A checklist of 4 papers to send with your application before the language exam.

The cover letter line that gets you an interview

Most cover letters say "I will take the Fachsprachprüfung soon." That line tells HR nothing.

Name the date and the chamber instead.

A before and after cover letter line: a vague sentence crossed out, replaced with a sentence naming the exam date and the chamber.

A line like "I have booked my language exam for 14 March with the Nordrhein chamber" shows HR a real date. That date sits on a real calendar.

That is what moves your file to a senior doctor's desk.

Ask this before you sign

Ask the HR office in writing: can my contract start after the exam result, not before?

Most hospitals that already interviewed you will agree. They usually set the start date 4 to 8 weeks later.

Rules differ by chamber

Germany has 17 state medical chambers. Each one handles a booked exam date differently.

The Nordrhein chamber in North Rhine-Westphalia tends to confirm a booked date fast.

Some chambers in Bavaria expect the exam passed before a hospital will interview you at all.

Ask your own chamber how it handles applications before you build your plan around a different state.

What to do now

  1. Book your language exam for doctors and get the confirmation letter from your chamber.
  2. Send your CV, degree, transcripts, B2 certificate, and that confirmation letter to hospitals now.
  3. Add one line to your cover letter naming the exam date and the chamber.
  4. Ask HR in writing if your contract start date can follow the exam result.

Stand: 2026-11-02. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's medical chamber (Landesärztekammer) before you act.
