A weekly plan to apply to German hospitals

Stop cramming 20 applications into one weekend. A 4-day plan gets 5 real applications to German hospitals sent by Thursday.

A weekly plan for foreign doctors in Germany: Spread the papers across 4 days, and five real applications go out without a burned-out weekend.

Twenty applications in one weekend sounds efficient. It burns you out by Sunday night, and the rushed CV shows it.

Spread the work across the week instead. One task a day, five hospitals by Thursday.

Why one big weekend fails

Saturday morning you open ten job pages. By Saturday night you have rewritten one CV three times and sent nothing.

Sunday you are tired, so you close the laptop. The week resets.

The problem is not your German or your CV. It is doing everything in one sitting.

No one can keep that up for a month.

What happens each day

Monday: open the job board once and pick 5 real postings in your specialty. Close the other 50 tabs.

A small hospital usually answers faster than a university clinic. Add one or two to your list.

Tuesday: put your papers in one folder. Every hospital asks for the same things.

Your CV photo, a copy of your licence or your temporary work permit (Berufserlaubnis), and your language certificate.

Wednesday: write one CV in German. Change only the top 3 lines for each hospital.

Put the department name and the senior doctor you are writing to in those lines. Do the same with the cover letter.

Thursday: send all 5 emails on the same day. Write one email per hospital, never a mass copy.

Then mark your calendar for a follow-up call or email in 2 weeks.

The 4-day plan: Monday pick jobs, Tuesday gather papers, Wednesday write CV and letter, Thursday send all 5.

What to keep ready every week

Build the folder once and reuse it. Your CV, your licence or permit copy, your language certificate and your ID photo do not change week to week.

Next week, Tuesday takes 10 minutes instead of an hour. The folder already sits on your desktop.

A checklist of the papers to keep ready in one folder: CV, licence or permit copy, language certificate, ID photo.

Do this today

  1. Pick 5 job postings and save the links and contact names, nothing else today.
  2. Make one folder on your desktop for your licence copy, language certificate and CV photo.
  3. Write your base CV in German once, so Wednesday is only 3 lines of changes per hospital.
  4. Block Thursday afternoon on your calendar as the day you send all 5.
