German Hospital Cuts ICU Doctor Jobs: München Klinik Harlaching is cutting intensive care jobs, and the doctors there are pushing back.

München Klinik Harlaching, one of Munich's public hospitals, is cutting jobs on its intensive care unit (Intensivstation). Staff there are protesting the plan.

What is happening at Harlaching?

München Klinik Harlaching is reducing posts on its ICU ward. Doctors and nurses there have gone public with their objections, and local reports describe staff meetings and open letters against the cuts.

This is one department at one site. It is not München Klinik closing down, and it is not Munich hospitals in general freezing hiring.

Why doctors there are pushing back

An ICU runs on a fixed number of beds and a fixed number of doctors per shift (Bereitschaftsdienst). Cut the posts, and the same patients still arrive at 3am.

That is the complaint from the staff: fewer doctors, same workload. It is also why a department mid restructuring is a bad target for a new application right now.

What this means for your application

If Harlaching's ICU or anesthesiology department was on your list, drop it for now. A ward cutting posts is not hiring junior doctors (Assistenzärzte), no matter what an old job ad says.

München Klinik itself is bigger than Harlaching. It also runs sites in Schwabing, Bogenhausen and Neuperlach, each with its own ICU and its own hiring decisions.

Where to look instead in Munich

  • München Klinik Schwabing
  • München Klinik Bogenhausen
  • München Klinik Neuperlach
  • LMU Klinikum München
  • Klinikum rechts der Isar (TU München)
A list of Munich hospitals still hiring ICU doctors, as alternatives to München Klinik Harlaching.

A hospital group with a hiring freeze on one site is often hiring harder on another, to cover the gap. Ask directly rather than guessing.

What to do before you apply

  1. Search the job board by hospital name (Schwabing, Bogenhausen, rechts der Isar), not just the city of Munich.
  2. Email the department directly: ask if the post is open now, or still listed from before the cuts.
  3. Add LMU Klinikum and Klinikum rechts der Isar to your shortlist alongside München Klinik's other sites.
  4. If you already applied to Harlaching's ICU, ask in writing whether the post still exists before you wait for a reply.
