Approbation, FSP or Kenntnisprüfung still pending

The exact German words for every stage of the licence process, so a hospital knows when you can start.

Ahmed Quteishat, Assistenzarzt, Innere Medizin (Berlin) · Founder of Klaro
Updated:

In short

Write the real stage of each step with its date, in German, and never "bestanden" (passed) before the result is out. Use "beantragt" (applied for), "angemeldet" (registered) or "ausstehend" (pending). Put the lines in their own CV section and repeat the same wording in your cover letter.

The wording for each stage

Approbation and Berufserlaubnis
Applied for
Approbation: beantragt am 03/2026 beim Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales Berlin
Knowledge exam required
Approbation: Kenntnisprüfung erforderlich (Bescheid vom 05/2026)

Temporary permit
Berufserlaubnis: erteilt am 02/2026, gültig bis 01/2028

Fachsprachprüfung: angemeldet, Termin am 14.01.2027, Ärztekammer Berlin

Kenntnisprüfung: Termin am 14.03.2027, Ergebnis ausstehend
Passed
Fachsprachprüfung: bestanden am 14.01.2027, Ärztekammer Berlin
German
General German
Deutsch: B2 (Goethe-Zertifikat, 2025)
Course in progress
Deutschkurs C1, Goethe-Institut Amman, seit 09/2026

Always the date you actually have, never the year you hope to pass. Which authority and which chamber depend on your Bundesland.

Where it goes in the CV

  • In the profile at the top, in one sentence: "Approbation in Deutschland beantragt. Deutschkenntnisse auf B2-Niveau (Goethe-Zertifikat)."
  • In its own section, "Approbation und Prüfungen", with one line per step from the lists above.
  • Time spent on the process is its own entry, not a gap: "Anerkennungsverfahren und Vorbereitung auf die Kenntnisprüfung, Berlin".

And in the cover letter

One sentence in the last paragraph, word for word the same as in the CV, plus your earliest start date. For example: "Meine Approbation habe ich im März 2026 beantragt; die Fachsprachprüfung lege ich am 14. Januar 2027 ab." The full letter: Cover letter for a hospital job in Germany.

Example: a CV with Approbation applied for

Lina Haddad (an example person) has applied for her Approbation and holds German B2. Her profile says so in two sentences.

Why it matters

A hospital can ask the authority or the medical chamber about your file. A "passed" that was not true usually ends the whole application, not just one line of it. A clear "pending" is normal: hospitals that hire international doctors know the process takes months, often more than a year. More in Write exam pending, not passed.

The Approbation process changes from 1 November 2026: for degrees from outside the EU, the Kenntnisprüfung becomes the normal route. See what changes in November 2026.

Questions

Can I apply for jobs before my Approbation is granted?

Yes. Many hospitals hire doctors whose Approbation or Berufserlaubnis is in progress and plan the start date around it. See applying after filing your Approbation application.

What is the German word for pending?

"Ausstehend", as in "Ergebnis ausstehend" (result pending). For an exam you are registered for, use "angemeldet".

Should I write my Berufserlaubnis on the CV?

Yes, with the date it was granted and the date it ends. It allows you to work as a doctor before the Approbation. See Berufserlaubnis before Approbation.

What if I failed an exam attempt?

You do not have to list failed attempts. Write your next exam date. Never write "bestanden" until you have passed.
