German doctors start radiology almost from zero

A move from vascular surgery to radiology is possible in Germany, but most surgical years do not replace radiology training months.

German doctors start radiology almost from zero: Vascular surgery years rarely shorten radiology training for foreign doctors.

Vascular surgery years rarely shorten radiology training in Germany. You can switch specialties, but expect to start most radiology training from the beginning.

Your state medical chamber (Landesärztekammer) makes the final decision. A chief, hospital, or recruiter cannot promise you credited months.

Why surgery months rarely transfer

Radiology is its own specialist training programme. Its training record lists image reporting, ultrasound, CT, MRI, radiation safety, and image-guided procedures.

Vascular surgery teaches useful skills. You may have worked with angiography images, contrast, catheters, and emergency bleeding.

But surgery training is built around operations, ward rounds, wound care, and surgical night duty. Those months do not replace supervised image reporting in a radiology department.

  • Vascular operations do not replace CT and MRI reporting.
  • Surgical ward work does not replace radiology outpatient work.
  • A catheter procedure only helps if your papers show radiology supervision.
  • A course certificate does not replace months in a radiology department.

Who decides your credited months

The state medical chamber checks your certificates against its own training rules. Germany has state chambers, and each chamber issues its own specialist training rules.

The Federal Medical Association publishes a model training rule. Your chamber may follow it closely, but its written rule is the one used for your application.

The chamber reads each employment certificate. It looks for dates, weekly hours, department name, named supervisor, and your daily tasks.

What may help your case

A small number of months may be credited if you trained inside a radiology service. This is stronger when a radiology specialist supervised your work and signed your training record.

For example, an endovascular unit may sit inside a radiology department. Your certificate should name angiography, fluoroscopy, image-guided procedures, and the radiology supervisor.

A vascular surgery certificate that only says "resident doctor" gives the chamber little to work with. Ask for a detailed certificate before leaving that hospital.

Do this before you resign

Do not leave your vascular surgery job based on a verbal answer. Get the chamber's answer in writing before you choose a radiology contract.

  1. Request a detailed certificate from your vascular surgery chief.
  2. List angiography, fluoroscopy, catheter work, and named supervisors.
  3. Send the certificate and training record to your state medical chamber.
  4. Ask in writing: "How many months will you credit toward radiology specialist training?"
  5. Apply for radiology jobs knowing the written answer.

The switch is realistic. The price is time: most doctors complete most of the radiology programme after changing specialties.
