Germany lets doctors apply after five years

Five years after graduation does not create a new German licence route. Send clear papers that show your medical work, courses, and any gap.

German doctors can apply later: 5 years after graduation does not block your licence application.

Yes. Five years after graduation does not block your German doctor licence.

The licensing office checks the same application file. Explain every year since graduation with clear papers.

Your graduation date does not create a new exam. Your degree country and German state decide the licence route.

The gap does not change the route

For a degree from outside the EU, the knowledge exam is the normal route from 1 November 2026. This rule applies whether you graduated last year or 5 years ago.

You can ask for a paper comparison of your degree. Ask within 4 weeks of applying, because that choice is binding.

The licensing office in your chosen state handles the file. It checks your passport, degree, transcripts, home licence, language papers, and recent certificates.

What the office wants to see

A 5-year period is easy to read when your CV has no blank lines. Write the month and year beside every hospital, course, family break, and exam period.

If you worked as a doctor, send an employer certificate. It should name the hospital, specialty, job title, dates, and daily tasks.

  • A CV with every month since graduation
  • Employer certificates from hospitals or clinics
  • A detailed job reference listing ward work and duties
  • Your home licence and a current certificate of good standing
  • Course certificates, exam results, or observership letters
A checklist shows 5 papers that explain a doctor’s years after graduation.

A short employer letter saying only “Dr X worked here” is weak. A letter naming admissions, ward rounds, and discharge letters is stronger.

Add emergency duty and procedures if you did them. The office can then see your job clearly.

What if you stopped working

You can still apply after a break from medicine. Put the break in your CV clearly.

Do not leave 18 months between two jobs with no line beside it. Write the real reason in plain words.

For example: “January 2023 to June 2024: family care in Amman.” You can also write: “German course and knowledge exam preparation in Cairo.”

The office may ask for more papers when years are missing. Send one clear explanation first.

Do not send 40 unsorted screenshots from your phone. Send dated certificates and employer letters instead.

Recent papers matter most

Your certificate of good standing must be under 3 months old. Your criminal record extract must also be under 3 months old.

Your medical certificate must be under 3 months old too. Get these 3 papers near the end of file preparation.

Your degree certificate can be older. The recent certificates cannot.

What to do now

  1. Make a month-by-month CV from graduation until today.
  2. Request employer certificates with dates, specialty, and daily duties.
  3. Write one line for every break, including language study or family care.
  4. Collect your good standing, criminal record extract, and medical certificate last.
  5. Email the licensing office and ask which work papers it needs in your state.

Stand: 2026-10-20. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
