Can savings replace your German blocked account?
Savings can replace a blocked account only if the German embassy accepts them. A sponsor or paid job contract can also prove your living costs.

Savings can replace a blocked account for a German recognition visa. But the German embassy must accept your bank papers first. A screenshot of money in your normal account is not enough by itself.
The embassy wants one clear answer: who pays your rent, food, insurance, and transport in Germany? Your visa file must show that the money is there and that you can use it.
What is a blocked account?
A blocked account is a German bank account with a monthly withdrawal limit. You put the full amount into the account before the visa decision. Then you receive part of it each month after arrival.
For the recognition visa, the official amount is €1,091 per month. That is €13,092 for 12 months, as of October 2026. Your visa may cover fewer months, so ask the embassy which amount applies to your file.

When can savings work?
Savings work when the embassy accepts a bank statement showing money you can freely use. The statement should show your name, account number, bank name, balance, and recent transactions.
Money that arrived yesterday creates questions. The visa officer may ask where it came from. Add the sale contract, salary slips, inheritance paper, or transfer receipt that explains a large deposit.
A blocked account is simpler because the bank limits the money each month. That is why many embassies ask for it even when you have savings elsewhere.
Can a sponsor pay for you?
Yes, a person living in Germany can sign a formal sponsorship declaration. The local foreigners office checks that person's income before issuing the paper.
Your cousin's invitation letter does not replace this document. The paper must be the formal sponsorship declaration, called a Verpflichtungserklärung.
Can your hospital contract count?
Yes, a paid hospital contract can prove your living costs if the salary starts when you arrive. The embassy will read the start date, gross salary, working hours, and job title.
A future junior doctor job is strongest when you already hold the temporary work permit needed for that job. A contract that starts only after your language exam or licence decision may leave a gap.
What to do before your appointment
- Read the visa checklist from the German embassy where you apply.
- Print bank statements for your savings and papers explaining large deposits.
- If using a sponsor, request the formal sponsorship declaration from their local foreigners office.
- If using a hospital contract, include the signed contract and your temporary work permit.
- Email the embassy one clear question about your chosen money proof before booking your appointment.
Use the money proof that matches your real situation. A blocked account is the clearest option. Savings, a sponsor, and a hospital contract work only when the embassy can clearly see who pays your bills in Germany.
Stand: 2026-10-14. This is a guide, not legal advice. Every German state has its own rules, and rules change. Check with your state's [medical chamber (Landesärztekammer)](https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/aerztekammern) before you act.
